Medication Treatment for COPD Treatment with medications may help relieve many of the symptoms caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) although medications are often less helpful if the person continues to smoke. There is no one medication that is best for every person, so it may take some time to find the appropriate medication and dose for you. Many of the medications used to treat COPD are also used to treat asthma. Medications that relax and open the airways are bronchodilators, such as beta2-agonists (ex. Albuterol) and anticholinergics, (ex. Ipratropium Bromide) are the treatment of choice for COPD. Some people may require a combination of medicines. Others will benefit by taking an anti-inflammatory medication (corticosteroids such as Triamcinolone) in addition to bronchodilators. People who still have low oxygen levels despite medical treatment may need oxygen therapy, which can help reduce symptoms and help a person be more active. Now is the time to relax and enjoy life. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth even more in your golden years
