Symptoms of Untreated Sleep Apnea:

According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep apnea is a condition that affects more than 18 million Americans. While it is a common sleep disorder, it can have long-term side effects, and it is essential to be aware of its warning signs. The most common sleep apnea symptoms include:
  • Loud snoring
  • Episodes in which you stop breathing during sleep (reported by another person)
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Awakening with a dry mouth
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty staying asleep (insomnia)
  • Excessive sleepiness (hypersomnia)
  • Difficulty paying attention while awake
  • Irritability

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Risk Factors:

Some factors that increase the risk of this form of sleep apnea include:
  • Being overweight
  • Neck circumference
  • A narrowed airway: Tonsils or adenoids can enlarge and block the airway, particularly in children
  • Being male: Men are two to three times more likely to have sleep apnea than women
  • Use of alcohol or smoking
  • Nasal congestion

What is OSA?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious but treatable medical illness, defined as “disordered breathing during sleep due to a partial or complete collapse of the upper airway, which causes pauses in breathing or shallow breathing.” OSA leads to low oxygen levels (desaturation), sleep fragmentation, and potential associated diseases.

How sleep apnea negatively affects your health

  • Pauses in breathing activate the sympathetic nervous system, causing:
    • Increased heart rate
    • Peripheral blood vessel constriction
    • Increased brain wave activity, affecting the brain’s ability to get adequate rest
