The symptoms of COPD are usually constant and can slowly progress over many years. Learn about the common symptoms and risk factors of COPD.

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms of COPD might include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • A chronic cough that may produce mucus (sputum)
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Lack of energy
  • Unscheduled physician visits
  • Chronic exacerbations leading to frequent hospitalizations/readmissions

What about Risk Factors?

Smoking is a major villain. Not all smokers get COPD; however, the vast majority of COPD sufferers have either smoked in the past, smoke currently, or have had exposure to secondhand smoke. Long-term exposure to workplace pollutants like toxic chemicals, dust, or fumes are also a risk for COPD. Additionally, genetic predisposition may be a factor, even in the absence of smoking and pollutants.
