Nasal cannulas are the most common form of oxygen delivery device used in oxygen therapy. They consist of a lightweight tube that splits into two prongs that are inserted into the nostrils1. While nasal cannulas are effective in delivering oxygen to patients, some individuals may experience discomfort or irritation while using them.
Here are some tips for nasal cannula placement:
- Insert the prongs of the oxygen nose piece into your nostrils.
- Take the oxygen tubes on either side of your face and lift them over your ears, similar to how you would put on glasses.
- Adjust the fit by using the slider that holds the tubes together under your chin. Ensure that the tubes of the nasal cannula rest comfortably over the tops of your ears and sit snugly against your jaw and chin.
Here are some tips to help improve nasal cannula comfort:
- Proper fit: Ensure that the cannula is properly fitted to your face. The prongs should rest comfortably in your nostrils without causing an irritation or pressure. Make sure the tubing is long enough to allow for movement without pulling on the cannula.
- Moisture: Dry nasal passages can be irritated by the constant flow of oxygen. Your doctor may prescribe added humidification to your concentrator unit in an effort to keep your nasal passages moist and comfortable. You may also use a saline spray as an effective solution for dry nasal passages.
- Skin Protection: The tubing of the nasal cannula can sometimes cause irritation or pressure sores on the skin around the nostrils. Use padding or fabric medical tape to protect the area and prevent irritation.
- Ear comfort: If the tubing of the nasal cannula rubs against your ears and leads to discomfort, consider using ear wraps to enhance comfort and reduce chafing and soreness while undergoing oxygen therapy. This is particularly beneficial for the area behind and over the ears. You can cut the ear wraps to shorter lengths if needed.
