Symptoms of FTT may include:
  • Lack of weight gain or loss
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability or fussiness
  • Digestive problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Lack of age-appropriate social response (i.e., smile)
  • Poor appetite
  • Slow or stagnant growth
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Pale skin
  • Decrease urine output or dark-colored urine
  • Delayed motor development
  • No vocal sounds

Some risk factors that may lead to failure to thrive include:
  • Emotional deprivation from parental withdrawal, rejection, or hostility
  • Economic problems that affect nutrition, living conditions and parental attitudes
  • Environmental exposures to infections, parasites, or toxins
