As summer approaches, the rising temperatures and increased humidity can pose significant challenges for individuals living with respiratory conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It’s essential to take proactive measures to manage your condition effectively during the hotter months.
Here are some tips to help patients stay comfortable and safe this summer:
  1. Stay Hydrated. Hot weather can lead to dehydration, which may exacerbate COPD symptoms. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, focusing on water1. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  2. Monitor the Weather. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, especially regarding temperature and humidity levels. On extremely hot and humid days, consider staying indoors during the peak heat hours (typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.).2
  3. Create A Cool Environment. Ensure your living area remains cool and comfortable. Utilize fans or air conditioning to lower the temperature and enhance air circulation. When you feel overheated, your body craves more oxygen to help regulate its temperature, often resulting in what is known as breathlessness.3 When outdoors, stay in shaded areas and schedule your errands for the morning hours when it’s cooler and the sun isn’t at its peak intensity. If you start to feel fatigued or short of breath, seek a cooler environment immediately.
  4. Dress Appropriately. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton. Avoid heavy layers that can trap heat and make breathing more difficult.
  5. Stick to Your Treatment Plan. Continue to follow your prescribed treatment plan, including medications and oxygen therapy. If your healthcare provider has recommended specific adjustments during the summer months, make sure to adhere to those guidelines.
  6. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness. Be aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, or confusion4. If you experience any of these symptoms, move to a cooler location and seek medical attention if needed.
  7. Stay Connected with Your Health Team. Regular communication with your healthcare provider is important. If you notice any changes in your symptoms or managing your COPD becomes more challenging during summer, reach out to your healthcare provider for support.

Managing COPD during the summer months requires vigilance and preparation. By staying hydrated, monitoring the weather, and taking appropriate precautions, patients may enjoy the season while keeping their COPD under control.
