DME and Medicare

For most people, the cost of healthcare is a significant concern. Fortunately, Medicare Part B covers durable medical equipment as long as the equipment has been deemed medically necessary by your prescribing practitioner and meets other required criteria.

Depending on your medical need, you may be covered for equipment rental—and you may even have the option to purchase the equipment. Whether you rent or purchase equipment, you may be responsible for 20% of the cost of the equipment, unless you have a supplemental insurance that may pay all or a portion of the out-of-pocket cost after meeting your Part B deductible.

An Investment in Your Well-Being

Many health conditions can limit your independence in the home and your ability to engage in the activities you most enjoy. Durable medical equipment can help mitigate the obstacles that come along with certain conditions—think of DME as an investment in your quality of life.

The right DME provider can help you with your equipment needs so you are able to live a more comfortable, independent, and active life.

Choosing the Right DME

Because you can expect to use your DME for an extended period—from weeks to years—choosing the right device is critical to achieving the best possible quality of life. Consider these factors along with discussions with your prescribing practitioner:

  • How long will you use the device? Recovery from a one-time trauma may necessitate different features and requirements than someone managing a chronic condition for an extended period.
  • What activities will you need it for? Respiratory patients who love to hike may prioritize device portability, while patients whose lives center around the home may favor a more extensive setup with advanced capabilities. Put the life you live at the center of your decision-making process.
