Nebulizer inhalation therapy is a common treatment for respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis1. It works by turning liquid medication into a fine mist that can be inhaled into the lungs, providing effective relief for breathing difficulties.
However, while nebulizer therapy is an effective way to manage respiratory conditions, it is crucial to keep your equipment clean and well maintained to ensure optimal results, function and prevent the risk of infection.
Here are some tips on how to properly clean your nebulizer supplies2:
- Wash your hands before handling your nebulizer to prevent any potential contamination.
- Disassemble your nebulizer kit according to the manufacturer's instructions. This typically involves removing the mouthpiece, medicine cup, and mask or tubing.
- After each treatment, take the nebulizer apart and rinse in hot running water.
- Once daily, disassemble the nebulizer and wash equipment in warm soapy water. (Liquid detergent only – for example, Joy.)
- Rinse all parts again with hot running water to remove any soap residue.
- Soak in disinfectant or decontaminate solution after last daily treatment. – Decontaminate solution – One part vinegar to three parts water. (Discard after each use.) Soak equipment for 30 minutes. Rinse in clear water; preferably distilled.
- Allow all parts to completely air dry on a lint-free towel (paper towels are fine) before reassembling the nebulizer kit.
- Store your nebulizer supplies in a sealed plastic bag to keep them clean.

In addition to regular cleaning, it is also important to replace disposable parts, such as masks, tubing and filters, as needed, according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Following these guidelines, you can easily place reorders for replacement parts through the new patient portal.
Pro Tip: It is recommended that you rinse your mouth out after completing your nebulizer and/or inhaler treatments to prevent the development of oral thrush3. Rinsing removes medicine residue and cleanses your mouth, which also stimulates saliva production and protects your teeth4.
By regularly cleaning and disinfecting your nebulizer supplies, you can help prevent the build-up of bacteria and ensure that your device continues to deliver medications effectively. If you have any questions about how to clean your nebulizer or supplies, contact your local center or follow the manufacturer’s guidelines provided with your machine.
